Every other day is a dependable routine for changing nectar and cleaning the feeder. Replace it sooner during extreme heat or whenever the liquid, ports, or feeder show contamination.

A practical nectar-changing schedule

Change the nectar and thoroughly clean the feeder every other day as a simple dependable routine. Change it sooner in very hot weather, direct sun, heavy use, insect contamination, or whenever the nectar becomes cloudy, stringy, mouldy, discoloured, or unusual-smelling.

Fresh-looking nectar can still need replacement

Sugar water begins changing before every problem is obvious. Warmth, sunlight, microorganisms, bird contact, insects, and residue inside the feeder can all affect nectar. Waiting for visible mould means waiting too long.

A regular schedule is easier and safer than trying to judge each batch by appearance alone. Mark refill days on a calendar or connect feeder care with another household routine.

Every other day is an easy baseline

The Smithsonian recommends changing feeders and thoroughly cleaning them every other day. It also says feeders should be cleaned and refilled at least twice a week in hot weather and once a week in cooler spring or fall conditions.

For an uncomplicated home routine, every other day avoids the need to debate whether a particular afternoon was hot enough to shorten the schedule. During heat waves or contamination, replace the nectar even sooner.

Use the weather as a warning, not permission to wait

Direct sun and high temperatures warm the feeder quickly. Shade during the hottest part of the day may slow the process, but it does not make nectar maintenance optional.

During very hot weather, inspect the feeder daily. A small feeder with only a modest amount of nectar makes frequent replacement easier and reduces waste.

Replace nectar immediately when anything looks wrong

Do not wait for the next scheduled cleaning when the feeder shows a problem. Empty and clean it immediately when you notice:

  • Cloudy or discoloured nectar
  • Threads, strings, flakes, or floating material
  • Mould around ports, seams, the base, or bottle
  • A fermented, sour, or unfamiliar smell
  • Dead insects or heavy insect contamination
  • Pollen, dirt, leaves, or droppings in the liquid
  • A sticky film that remains after rinsing
  • Leaking nectar collecting around the feeder

Never top up old nectar

Adding new nectar does not make old nectar fresh. It mixes a clean batch with residue and organisms already in the feeder. Empty the feeder completely before every refill.

Robin and I treat nectar changes as a reset: discard the old liquid, take the feeder apart, clean every reachable surface, rinse it well, and add a fresh measured batch.

Clean the feeder every time you change nectar

Pay special attention to flower ports, bee guards, seams, the base, and narrow channels. Mould can remain in small areas even after the main reservoir looks clean.

Use dedicated feeder brushes and very hot water for routine scrubbing. Cornell also describes a dilute bleach solution of no more than one part bleach to nine parts water for feeder cleaning. When using any sanitizing method, rinse extremely well and allow the feeder to air dry before refilling. Follow the feeder manufacturer's directions when materials require special care.

Choose a feeder you can fully inspect

Simple feeders with wide openings and removable parts are usually easier to keep safe. Decorative bottles with hidden tubes, glued parts, or narrow cavities may hold residue that is difficult to reach.

Before buying another feeder, imagine cleaning every nectar path. If you cannot reach it with a small brush or inspect it clearly, maintenance may become a constant problem.

Smaller feeders can be healthier and less wasteful

A large reservoir is useful only when hummingbirds empty it rapidly. Otherwise, a small feeder encourages frequent fresh batches and leaves less nectar to discard.

Fill according to actual use rather than feeder capacity. When migration brings more birds, increase the amount or add another easy-to-clean feeder while maintaining the same replacement schedule.

Keep the feeder in shade when practical

A location with afternoon shade can reduce heating. Nearby trees or shrubs also provide hummingbirds with perches, although the feeder should remain visible and positioned with window safety in mind.

Do not place a feeder so close to dense activity that birds are constantly startled. Avoid hanging it directly above seating, food-preparation areas, or places where leaking nectar creates a sticky hazard.

Manage ants, bees, and wasps without contaminating nectar

When bees or wasps crowd the ports, use a level saucer-style feeder and follow bird-safe ways to reduce bees and wasps. Do not coat ports, hanging wires, or feeder surfaces with oil, petroleum jelly, pesticides, or other sticky substances.

Refrigerated nectar has a different clock

Extra nectar stored in a clean covered container in the refrigerator can be kept for no more than one week according to Smithsonian guidance. Once it is placed outside, follow the feeder-changing schedule rather than counting from the day the batch was mixed.

Write the preparation date on the container. Discard refrigerated nectar early if it becomes cloudy or mouldy.

A quiet feeder still needs care

Low activity does not preserve nectar. If only one hummingbird visits occasionally, use less nectar and continue cleaning on schedule. Never leave an old batch outside because it has barely been consumed.

Leaving a feeder up does not stop migration
